LJC's Youth Leadership Academy Connection Key to Franklin's Public Art Sculpture Project
Some members of the Leadership Johnson County's Youth Leadership Academy recently helped create a beautiful public art project.
The graduates and current students served on the Franklin Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council which planned the new sculpture at the roundabout in front of Franklin Community High School.
The Franklin Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council has been working on the project since last school year and timed the project to be added to a new roundabout at the intersection of Cumberland Drive, Simon Road and Commerce Drive during construction last summer. The roundabout is in front of the Franklin Community High School. The youth council decided to piggyback off the city’s project by adding a sculpture to beautify their school and create a new western gateway into the city.
The sculpture features holes carved into the shape of various Franklin symbols, such as a key and kite to represent Benjamin Franklin and a bear to represent the Franklin High School Grizzly Cub mascot.
The original sculpture design was created by Amelia Tisdale (23). Other YLA alumni/students involved in the project included Liam Clarke (23), Shelby Gill (23), Morgan Harvey (22), Ella McGuinness (24), Kinley Shoemaker (22), Emma Williams (22) and Lizzi Worland (24).
The students worked with artist Arlon Bayliss, and LJC Alumni Franklin Mayor Steve Barnett (17), Franklin City Chief of Staff Tara Payne (16) and Jhennifer Sanchez (22) of BoMar Industries to create the final design and to get it manufactured and installed.
LJC and YLA-connected members of the FRMYLC pose in front of the new roundabout tree sculpture and include Tara Payne (far left), Morgan Harvey (next to Tara), Emma Williams (fifth from left), Shelby Gill (fifth from right), Amelia Tisdale (second from right) and Mayor Steve Barnett (far right).
